ALL minds are rightly focussed on this Wednesday’s date of destiny for Rangers’ fans the world over, but Rangers TV will also be looking towards the second most important game of the season.
The final round of league games takes the Gers’ to Pittodrie, a ground where they’ve enjoyed mixed fortunes of late. However, it could be the venue where Rangers secure a historic quadruple when they visit on Thursday 22nd May, in what will be the third instalment of a crazy week of four games in seven days.
Their last trip north this season was just before Christmas [Rangers Rewind May 15th 09:45].
There was, however, little festive cheer around as the game finished in a bad tempered 1-1 draw. The ‘gers took the lead in the 30th minute but were pegged back, notably after Lee McCulloch’s dismissal, seven minutes later.
Despite being down to ten men, our heroes still dominated the match for large periods, with Alan Hutton in particular, in excellent form. This was to be one of Al’s last games in the Light Blue before departing to Tottenham Hotspur.
Also on show this week is a more satisfying Rangers result against Aberdeen in 2005 [Don and Dusted May 15th 23:15].
It goes back to an era when Rangers had an unparalleled level of dominance against the Dons, at the time having not lost a league game to them since 1998.
That record was extended with brutal efficiency as Barry Ferguson and Dado Prso (with two) secured a 3-1 win in a torrential downpour.
What made that result more significant was that it coincided with Celtic’s home defeat to Hibs the previous day, closing the gap to two points and allowing the incredible turn of events that occurred on the final day of the season.
The omens are certainly there for Rangers to recreate, if not surpass, that seasons’ achievements, and the way 2007/08 has gone, would you wager against them?
